It was the early 1940s in Snow Hill, NC. James G. Exum had a kennel full of beloved beagles and mange was making their lives miserable. Being a tinkerer, an amateur chemist, and the owner of a very large Pharmacology book, James went to work in his garage and mixed up a batch of mange medicine that worked better than anything else on the market.

In an era when vet care was often scarce or costly, James took matters into his own hands. As ailments affected his dogs, he crafted effective treatments to heal them. Word of his remedies spread quickly, sparking demand from fellow dog owners, and before long, James found himself in business. The name Happy Jack was a natural choice, inspired by his prized beagle, Contentnea Jack—a fitting tribute to the loyal companion who started it all.

From the beginning, Happy Jack has been a family business.

Founded by James, Happy Jack grew through the dedication of his sons, Joe and Ashe, who expanded the product line and distribution over the years. Now, the company thrives under its third generation of leadership. Joe’s son, Manning, who started working at Happy Jack as a kid, is steering the business into the future with passion and vision. Alongside him are loyal employees, many from families who have served the company for two or three generations. This rich legacy of family and commitment makes Happy Jack a truly special place.
